just orderin a new power supply. I woke up this morning with my secondary rig totally dead, no fans spinning or anything. Fiddled with it a tiny bit, but I had to go to work. I figure its the power supply since the one in there is a cheapy. (came with a coolermaster case, but its some off brand "certified" by CM) Hopefully nothing fried when it all went down!

One of the reasons why I posted an extensive post on Power Supplies and other stuff related to reliability, stability and efficiency when Folding in a sticky (somewhere amongst the 2nd series of Folding frogs Companions http://forums.pcper.com/showthread.php?t=442827
this one more specifically http://forums.pcper.com/showthread.php?t=432078
I hope you ordered a 80PLUS type and one from a 'good' maker ...
The 80PLUS org has a list of certified 80% and higher efficiency PSU's from top makers.
Buying such a PSU will lower your electricity bill significantly and will pay you back the higher purchase cost and will in thereafter lower your real energy cost !
So, only positives; after a higher purchasing cost, lower power usage from the PSU for the same job, lower losses = heat in the room/house which makes a big difference in A/C usage (= power =energy cost) and because you bought a more reliable product, a longer life which is made even longer by the lower working temps of that PSU !
Your system will also run more reliably too
If you then also buy a good Surge Arrester box (multi-socket), your complete systems will live longer and be more safe from Voltage spikes !
.
I could reduce my energy use a lot if I was to put my systems directly into a proper surge protected power bar, instead of my UPS. UPSes waste so much power, and generate a lot of heat (at least anything large enough that's worth buying).
.
UPS makers should follow the lead of the 80PLUS org; I suspect that they already are making more efficient products, because they are very similar to a PSU. They just use a battery to make AC and use a battery charger to fill up that battery.
Battery technology has also progressed vastly, so I 'd expect a reduction in losses there too ...
All the electronic switching gear in a UPS should be much more efficient then a few years back.
I think you would really benefit from updating your UPS system(s) energy wise
.
Yea, well I know that I should have gone with a higher PSU, but couldn't afford the expenditure at the time. The system is basically just driving a GPU though so i figured the wattage/amperage was way higher than neccessary, putting the PSU in a decent spot in terms of % of full capacity. I guess I was wrong. I just hope that it actually was the PSU and that it didnt fry anything on its way out the door. That'd make it an easy fix
