A7N8X standby (S3) issue

Despite having enabled the bios option "ACPI Suspend to RAM", if I select standby in Windows XP Pro the CPU Fan continues to spin when standby is reached. Also the DVD drives will still eject their trays. This should not happen as in true S3 standby mode only the RAM +5V rail should have voltage. All other rails should be powered off so that total power consumtion is reduced to ~5W. While in Standby mode my power led flashes.

Does anyone else have this problem. I tried several bioses in the 1001 and 1002 series. And I'm pretty sure that it all once worked. I have no idea if this is caused by WinXP Pro or by some bios quirk.

Thx JockyW

I have similar problens with the S3 state. Except my computer will only enter the S1 state even though it is set to S3 in the BIOS. I think its a problem with WIn XP. I have tried all the BIOS revisions with no solution.
I think somehow a registry setting got hosed while OC'ing. As I had some problems resuming from S3 while OC'ed. It did power off, in the S3 setting, correctly after a fresh install however.
I think a format and reinstall might be the answer, in my case anyway.

I've had an S3 issue with this board since day one. On a fresh install, S3 enabled in BIOS, the OS will go into S3, but will wake as a full boot with post, or a blank screen. Any subsequent attempts will go into S1 only.

A program called dumppo will allow you to see the current ac policy, and set it to S3 for testing.

CMD: DUMPPO AC MAXSLEEP=S3

I have yet to do another install with a new vid card but will do so soon. My current install is WinXP SP1 slipstreamed.

My original install was with CreativeLabs GF2 GTS, current vid is ATI built 9700Pro, all other hardware worked in S3 on A7V8X.
PS is Antec TruePower 430.

When S3 fails, I think is sets a bit in the BIOS to S1, until proven otherwise or fresh install, unless the OS carries the switch(in the registry) which I haven't found yet.

After restoring my Ghost image from 1/22 all is cool again !!

Auraka: I tried with DUMPPO, in fact I hoped that this cmd would heal it: DUMPPO CAP S3=1 (set the capability S3 standbymode to on)
Unfortunately it did not accept this setting. Apparantly XP has some registry entry where it keeps the allowed system power capabilities. If you once installed a driver which does not allow S3 standby, you lose this capability for all times.

My recent Ghost image has saved me from another sleepless night

guys where can I get dumppo.exe? I can't even find it on google! When I go into standby all the fans stay on as well. I'm assuming it's because i'm in S1 mode? Can someone send me the dumppo.exe so I can get my standby to work properly? Thanks!

ahh I thought I was a good google searcher! lol. Well I guess that's what these forums are for!

Ok I ran that command line and this is what it looks like:

D:\>dumppo AC MAXSLEEP=S3
AC power policy
Power button.........: Hibernate(QueryApps|UIAllowed)
Sleep button.........: Disabled Sleep(QueryApps|UIAllowed)
Lid close............: Disabled Sleep(QueryApps)
Lid open wake........: Working
Idle.................: Hibernate(QueryApps)
Settings.............: Timeout=1800, Sensitivity=50
Min sleep state......: S1
Max sleep state......: S3
Reduced latency.sleep: S1
WinLogonFlags........: 0
Doze S4 timeout......: 0
Battery broadcast res: 3
Battery discharge 0..: No battery, but enable is set
Battery discharge 1..: No battery, but enable is set
Battery discharge 2..: Disabled
Battery discharge 3..: Disabled
Video timeout.......: 1200
Hard disk timeout....: 1200
Optimize for power...: FALSE
Fan throttle toler...: 100
Forced throttle......: 100% (off)
Min throttle.........: 20%
Over throttle act....: Sleep(OverrideApps|DisableWakes|Critical)

What does this mean exactly? Did I SET sleep state to S3 by that dos command? If I go into standby now will everything appear to be off. I guess I will go test it now and find out but I have a bad feeling it won't.

Ok well I've got some good news and some bad news

Good news is that when went into standby it actually worked! All the fans shut off and it appeared to be off just like how standby is supposed to be.

The bad news is that unlike how standby is supposed to be, it would only turn the fans back ON, and not fully come out of standby. Any have any clues? Actually, my green power lit is STILL just blinking on and off. Damn, I hope someone knows how to fix this. Thanks,

Tom

Yes, you are setting the max. supported sleeplevel to S3. That should work, but only during your current windows session. You may add it to your startup programgroup.

To see your current settings just type:
D:\>dumppo AC
and check the maxsleep value

O, one more thing. In Bios you must set "Suspend to RAM". If you didn't set that before you installed XP chances are that it doesn't work.

My experience with S3 sleepmode is that if I resume from S3 that my box freezes after some minutes. Don't know why
A good test is to run Prime95 after resuming, it will freeze after some rounds.

That happened to me to the very first time. Do the following:
1. Power down your PC
2. Pull out the power cable
3. Wait a minute
4. Boot your PC
5. Put it in standby mode again (use DUMPPO if necessary)

Goodluck,

Here's a challenge for all those who are interested in not reinstalling Win XP to get S3 working:
Try to find the place (registrykey, cmos, config file, ..) where WinXP keeps it's powermanagement capabilities.

JockyW

PS: I didn't find it Tho I tried it with sysinternal's registrymonitor while running dumppo.

Yeah I just checked, it's back to S1. What would I put inside the startup group for it to always make maxlevel S3?

Ahh yes, I have to do that when it stays at "verifying DMI pool" for a while sometimes. Let me do a "hard" reboot and try it again. If it works this time I just need to know how to get dumppo to run automatically setting it in S3. Thanks!

Well, you can't use dumppo to permanently set maxsleep to S3. So put a shortcut to dummpo.exe in "Startup" (and don't forget the parameters AC MAXSLEEP=S3). That way at the beginning of your windows session your system is set to support S3

nope, still didn't come outta standby . Is there a registry tweak to fix this but it just hasn't been found? Would contacting Asus be of any help you think? I'd really not like to have to reinstall XP to get this working. Well, would a dirty install of XP fix it? I'm not sure if ACPI susp to RAM was enabled or not when I installed XP. Is that the kicker though? Thanks for your help. I hope I can get this!
