Re: What Is Your Favorite Military Pre 1950 Aircraft?

.

Another favourite of mine (on the U.S. side) was the B-17 Flying Fortress.

I have pictures of them who have come back to base (or England anyway) after whole parts of them were shot or blown away !
Incredibly strong aeroplanes they were

Only problem was landing one without the undercarriage out ...

Especially if you're a ball gunner stuck in the turret. It would seem to me I had to make a belly landing the 17 would have it over the rest as it was a low mid-wing design as opposed to a high wing like the 24 or the Lank. It is also my understanding that is one of the reasons why the landing gear retracted the way it did. Here's the underside of an F model showing what I mean.

noorman as far as handling battle damage this is a neat site that shows what the "lady" could take. While "old fashion" and required strong hands, arms, and legs the 17's cable "driven" controls could take a lot more damage than the hydraulics of the 24.

Re: What Is Your Favorite Military Pre 1950 Aircraft?

It really has dawned on me that I have a whole lot of likes from WWII and before aircraft wise. They will be slowly added as "filler" so as not to make this look like a one person deal, and look forward to hearing from the rest of y'all!

Special thanks to noorman, BWM, and the others for contributing!

For some reason (aesthetics?) I've mostly preferred water cooled to air cooled radials in most aircraft (especially fighters). Here is one of my "exceptions"....the F4 Corsair.

I always found this a very attractive fighter, just for its unusual wing shape I guess.
It 's very pleasing to the eye (mine anyway)

It 's a Navy plane, of course, which had foldable wings to be able to store it more easily and compactly

A couple of interesting side notes on the Corsair

1. While the bent wing was an aerodynamic consideration, the primary part of it was to keep the landing gear short as the 13' 6" prop made for ground clearance issues.

2. The Navy tested the design and found out it had too much "rebound" on landing and felt it was unsafe so they gave it to the Marine Corps as a land based fighter. After C-V fixed the shocks in the landing gear it gradually migrated back to carrier use and into Naval squadrons.

For an interesting take on the aircraft find and read this book by the primary test pilot for the aircraft, I really enjoyed it....... http://www.librarything.com/work/2755589

Re: What Is Your Favorite Military Pre 1950 Aircraft?

Here's another military pre 1950 aircraft for your consideration.

First flown in 1932, the P-26 was America's first all-metal monoplane fighter, and some were still serving with the Philippines army in 1941, and even managed to shoot down some Japanese aircraft.

Another paint scheme I loved was associated with the Curtiss P-6E Hawk as shown on this replica from Wright-Patterson

First they just did reconnaissance, then they dared shoot at each other with a pistol or rifle, then they started throwing bombs out of the cockpit.

Later on they started to install weaponry on the planes; there was the end of chivalry ...

Oh I don't know if it was the weapons or the individuals who ended that. There was a time when you wanted the enemy to see you, so as to challenge in a dual as knights in the sky.

However as weapons advanced and detection methods "improved" the distance increased and it defiantly "de-personalized" aerial warfare.

Smile Re: What Is Your Favorite Military Pre 1950 Aircraft?

Lo Folks

nice thread so I figured I'd jump on in

two German WWII planes which are my personal favourites

Kurt Tank's TA 152

http://www.warbirdphotographs.com/LCBW8/TA152-25f.jpg

http://www.warbirdphotographs.com/LCBW8/TA152-7f.jpg

Horten's HO 229

http://jpcolliat.free.fr/ho9/images/ho9v2_13.jpg

http://jpcolliat.free.fr/ho9/ho9-3.htm

I used to drive my folks daft making 1/72nd scale models painting them

and if I screwed up the painting out would come the trusty air pistol

and having hung the miss-painted model / models in a tree I'd proceed

to shoot seven shade's of the proverbial faecal matter outta them !!!!

Hhmmmnnn so many aircraft so few 2.2 cal pellets !!!!

Enjoy !!!!

Ahhhh, good to see you over here too!! Yes, if I had to pick my one (which I can't seem to do ) favorite it would have to be the TA-152H. Thanks for two pictures that I must have overlooked.

That last link on the Horten will need a bit of interp for me, but the pictures are fantastic!

If I got the time later on, I 'll try and translate that bit of history; it 's partly about the flight and crash of a prototype ...
