Exclamation Expenses all around going up and income going down !!

I am sure so many of us are caught in this web of economic destruction and the worst is yet to come.

I am compelled to cut back further on my energy bills; both oil and electric.

I have set my thermostat for heat down to 65 already and may go lower.

Electric I have converted almost all my lighting to the CFL energy savers.

We have cut back use of lights and even central air. However, my wife needs the central air on real bad days.

I cut back to 24/7 on one folding maching when I used to have 3 folding machines 24/7.

Now, I am going to cut back further on my folding.

At most I am going to let the gpu run 12 hours a day. The rest of the time I am going to turn off my computer. This will save a few more bucks.

It is a tragedy as to what is going on.

I will continue to be a moderator. However, I do not feel that I am doing much in regards to that assignment either.

I do check in and read posts and all of you are very well behaved.

I know that Noorman always welcomes new members.

So, I am not sure just how much I really contribute here.

Anyway, that is my story.

Best wishes to all of you and a happy and healthy holiday season.

Our Navy son, Lt Jg Chris is coming home next week from a 7 month deployment on his nuclear attack submarine. So we will be out celebrating with him this weekend and then his wedding in December 2009.

Be well.

Ralph

Hey Ralph I feel your pain as one New Yorker to another. We take and give what we can and ask no more. Have fun with your son and best wishes to all of yours.

Re: Expenses all around going up and income going down !!

Thank you Zetachi.

Gotta get out of here someday.

But what makes that a tough deal is my eldest son, Michael, is in a group home here and we want to stay near him.

I am thinking a couple of hours might not be too bad to get to see him.

Once my wife agrees off we go to Pennsylvania.

A much nicer state to retirees and much lower expenses.

Ralph

Re: Expenses all around going up and income going down !!

Interesting links.

However, it is the kwh/hr costs and the cost for a gallon of oil that ultimately determine savings or not with respect to switching to CFL light bulbs.

My electric cost is .20/kwhr, which is probably one of the highest rates around.

My oil right now costs about 2.25/gallon.

Your links are thought provoking for sure.

I know that many other areas have relatively inexpensive electricity.

You should surely look in to a private power production source (wind powered f.e.). If electricity is that expensive, you 'd have recouped the purchase & installation costs in no time !
You could easily burn your lights on that one and any excess production is money (in the bank or) off the electric bill

Hey Ralph, just because life requires you to modify your folding (looks like it'll be starting here too) doesn't mean you are not contributing. As so many of y'all have said "every little bit helps". SO DON'T THINK YOU NEED TO CUT BACK YOUR TIME HERE!!!!

And yes enjoy the "Squid's" time home!

Re: Expenses all around going up and income going down !!

Costs around the same for power here too DB,
19.4c per Kw/h, and with all these new carbon credit schemes etc I can't see it coming back down....
Only saving grace "downunder" is we seemed to miss the worst of the downturn, but I too have re examined my Folding rigs and cut back a little, now running 7 "200 series" Gpu's for their efficiency in points per Kw/h..
Don't stress over it mate, all the Folding Frogs have ever asked is "do what you can, when you can".....

If he's in NYC he won't have the space to do any of it himself.

The smaller models can be erected on a roof (even) / don't know what 's possible or allowed, that 's for him to make out, of course ...

I'm not an enviro-nazi by ant means, but this CFL thing really has me peeved. The canadian gov't wants to ban tungsten bulbs by 2012, as some huge PR move to save their green faces, even though in many parts of the country, it may increase our carbon footprint. In the meantime we all end up with houses with lighting better suited to a strip joint.

And don't get me started on hybrid cars...
