Looks like I've joined

Hiya. Looks like I've joined. I'm raz1337 on the team.

I have an Athlon II X4 620 @ 3 Ghz system sitting at home doing nothing since my Asus G51VX-X3A is just amazing for gaming. So, I've installed the folding software on it. There might be other details I'm missing, but I'll look into it later.

I might set it up on my other 2 laptops, but I'm not sure. This is kind of motivation to keep pushing for a faster and more effective processor, just for folding! :P

Welcome to Team 734,

I would have noticed after your first upload of finished WU results ( to be checked f.e. at the EOC Stats http://folding.extremeoverclocking.c...y.php?s=&t=734 )

What Client(s) did you install and on what hardware are you running them, just out of curiosity ?

I 'll prepare you an official welcome when the above happens (stats delay is about 3+ hours against the official stats at Stanford http://fah-web.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/...qtype=teampage because of work-delays and the fact that the EOC stats are updated every 3 hours ...

Other sites of interest are http://folding.stanford.edu/ and the News blog http://folding.typepad.com/ (Prof. Vijay Pande's personal blog, although he posts more on Twitter ...

Much more info on Folding@Home workings at these specific Wiki-site: http://fahwiki.net/index.php/Main_Page

Welcome!

You'll probably never stop playing with the details, trying to get just a little more out ... !

Re: Looks like I've joined

It says I'm running Folding @ Home Windows CPU Client Version 6.23. I'm running it on:

Athlon II X4 @ 13@230 - 3 Ghz
Gigabyte MA770-UD3P
2x1GB Ballistic DDR3 @ 1225

All I saw is that Folding is for some research. I just skimmed over it enough for 10 minutes before work just to get the client set up, haha.

The CPU Client is a client that runs single-core, 32-bit.

If you have that kind of hardware, I would suggest running the SMP Client; if you want high stability, I 'd suggest running it in Linux (download here: http://folding.stanford.edu/English/Download (needs a 64-bit Linux platform with 32-bit libs)
There 's also a Windows based SMP Client (a bit more troublesome) which can be downloaded from here: http://folding.stanford.edu/English/DownloadWinOther

installation instructions are to be found here: for Linux (final)http://foldingforum.org/viewforum.ph...6c4a75ca05440a

For Windows (still beta) http://foldingforum.org/viewforum.ph...6c4a75ca05440a

The SMP Client runs faster and has a higher yield, it 's a 2nd generation Client (GPU Clients can be called 2nd generation too, they started at the same date as the Linux SMP version) ...

Your choice, of course

The Linux version is slightly faster but neither version causes much trouble.

Re: Looks like I've joined

I downloaded, installed and configured the SMP client. 2 questions, though:

1) The guide said to avoid running it as a service, so am I left with an open command window all the time or did I open it the wrong way?

2) I'm getting a File IO Error when starting it. A quick Google said it was due to overclocking, but I set the system back to stock and still got it.

Yes, you won't notice after a while, (I have 2 going, hardly ever turn them off by accident any more (knock on wood)) some oses you can run as a service, which is why mmentin asked

You will need a windows password to install. If you don't have one you will need to do that. Ask and someone here can tell you how to get windows to ignore it at startup (forgot how myself)

Delete the old F@H (the work folder especially if in same folder) and then run install bat for the smp this will set up the smp inter-core communication..

Uhhh,

Vista ? Win 7 ?

Either way, you need to do the install from an admin command prompt

Re: Looks like I've joined

If in Vista (don't know about Win7), I remember them pointing out NOT to install the Client in the default path (Program Files), but in its own Folder because the elevated security on the Programs Folder makes it impossible to run !

A look around on the Web also discovers a few people who solved the problem just by re-installing the Client again (here f.e. http://www.tech-forums.net/pc/f109/f...-error-219093/ )

It 's been a long time since I Folded SMP under Windows; in the early days the Windows version was not stable enough and I switched to Linux for SMP Folding ( that 's why )

Thumbs up Re: Looks like I've joined

I am starting to feel real old.

Still on XP.

I have to look at Windows 7.

That is sounding like a good new system to try, but not Vista.

We will see.
