Welcome New members and Guests to PCPerspective's Folding Frogs Pond

This is a quick and detailed step by step guide for the first time folder here on TEAM 734

I will give my best attempt to help you out with a trouble free set up guide.
This guide is still under construction PM me with any Questions and/or corrections.
(More advanced Guides are in the works with console versions and Linux users in mind.. please be patient)

If you don't know what folding is and would like to know more
please visit our Folding Frogs Homepage

Now on to a Folding Frogs set up!

(For novice to advanced users we will go through the Graphical Client first)

First you need to download the Folding@home program.

Linux users click Here to D/L Fold@Home
And then click Here for Linux installation link.

Windows: XP/NT/2000 users click here (Link)

Windows: 98/ME users...
Windows Fold@Home Graphical client 4.0
1) Download FAH4.0 Graphical.exe (link above) to a folder in "my documents"
2)Open your "my documents" Right click on the "F@H" icon, chose send to, Desktop(create shortcut)
Step 3 is for AMD Athlon & Barton users only:
If you have a Duron or Intel Processor proceed directly to Step 4

*if your Rig is already an Oc'ing machine trying running F@H for a couple of days to check stability... then you can try step 3.
Next we will add our Tags
3) Return to the desktop and right click your new shortcut, select Properties, then add the switches
to the "Target" line
after the last quote " (space)-forceSSE
click (ok)
This tag will utilize SSE boost in your CPU and lower your time to complete a WU by up to 20%

go to your desktop and right click the icon, select Copy,
If you do not wish F@H to Auto start up proceed to STEP 7

you may have noticed that if you install F@H it only runs on the user that installed it is logged on and does not run while the other users are logged on.

This works with Windows XP Home and Pro

--If you want F@H to run for specified users on your computer,

copy the shortcut from your startup folder to the startup folders of the other users on the computer.

the startup folders are nomally located at the path

C:\Documents and Settings\******\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

****** being the user's name

--If you want F@H to run for ALL users on your computer,

move the shortcut from your startup folder to the All Users startup folder

this is normally located here:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

7) Next doubleClick on the "F@H" shortcut on your desktop and Start up your Folding@Home for the very first time.
Now its time to configure F@H
8) In the box "user name" type yours in.
*warning* Your user name is case and character sensitive
When installing on another PC each character must be entered correctly

Ex. Kiddetoolman if you use lowercase (k) kiddetoolman
you will be entered as 2 different users.

In the "Team Number" box please enter 734

9) Next click on the "Connection" tab
And choose the settings that best fit your internet application.

Dial up users can just click on "Use internet Explorer Connections"
I leave all my boxes unchecked.

10) Next click on the "Advanced" tab
Uncheck the "Logos enabled" box
Lower the bar for the "Molecule Draw rate" to the 4th on the left
Make sure the "Core Priority" is clicked in the "lowest possible"
ANd your CPU usage bar is set @ 100% to the far right

Next is "Client Type" This is set to "No preference" by default.
Click on the drop down box and select "Folding@home"
Verify setting to the picture I posted
Then click on the "ok"

Right now you are Folding ... and at this moment your working on your first WU (work unit)

11) To optimize your cpu cyles we need to disable your screen saver.
Right click on your desktop, cursor down and click on properties.
After your "Display Properties" opens click on your "Screensaver" tab
in the drop down box switch your screen to saver to "NONE"
Click Apply.
Simply turn off your monitor after each use.
If you need your monitor to turn off on its own (like myself)
cursor into your Energy Savings box and click on the "power..."
options properties
And set your montor to turn off at your desired time..see pics below
Click "OK" in your boxes and your finished.

12) Get rid of spyware!
Not only is spyware bad for anyone who values privacy, but spyware steals CPU cycles that should be folding proteins! Rid your computer of spyware. Here is a free spyware destroyer -Lavasoft's Ad-aware.

Download it; HERE (Link)

Just for giggles make sure you have an Anti-virus program installed.
Check for latest update, and run a scan on your system.
For a free Program - AVG Link

If you have a Personal firewall (McAfee-Norton) you might have to configure its settings to allow access to F@H to its servers so it can download new Work untis and uploads them when finished.
They Use Ports 80 or 8080.
(or you can change your F@H settings to "USE IE Settings")

If you are always connected to the internet and don't have a firewall. Download a free one ZoneAlarm

Thank you for joining Team 734 to fold with

Checking your Current Wu status / SSE causes an instability

First a quick guide, for the Graphical Client users, to check on you current WU status.

In your System tray, next to your time display, will be a Folding@Home icon.
If you pause your cursor over this icon, your project status will display
EX. F@h: working (250/500)
you have completed 250 steps out of 500.

Click once on your icon will bring up your "Folding@home display"

On the left will Display your :
Username:
Team Number (hopefully 734)
Project your currently working on:
Ex. p683_TZ2_NAT_EXP

Click HERE to find out how many points your current WU is worth.
Your WU progress
Ex 250/500
and total WU's completed to Date.

To check the log file on your current work unit.
Right click on your Folding@Home icon in your tray.
Cursor up to "Status"
Cursor over and click on "Log File"

Your notepad will open a box and your file should read similar to this.
(Check for SSE Boost)

and your Log file reads;
[14:46:15] Simulation instability has been encountered. The run has entered a
[14:46:15] state from which no further progress can be made.
[14:46:15] If you often see other project units terminating early like this
[14:46:15] too, you may wish to check the stability of your computer (issues
[14:46:15] such as high temperature, overclocking, etc.).
[14:46:15] Going to send back what have done.

HERE to help solve instability.

KNOWN PROBLEMS:

(1) Problem: Full screen mode on some Voodoo cards can cause crashes under
windows 98/ME
Suggestion: Run the console version, or don't go full screen
