I bought a tube of arctic silver II to use as a thermal compound between my CPU and HSF. I've read the instructions at arcticsilver.com, but I don't see any clarification on this topic. Is the arctic silver II compound all I need between the parts, or is an adhesive also required? Also, is it true that too much thermal compound can cause overheating? And for extra credit, does anyone know how this compound aids in the cooling process in the first place?

Answer: No adhesive required

Answer: Not necessarily overheating but too much can begin to act as an insulator. Put a very thin even layer on the CPU only.

Answer: The compound fills any air pockets/voids that may exist between the HSF and CPU (lapping the HSF reduces this to a minimum). At the molecular level the two surfaces are infact very rough, hills and valleys if ya like. The compound also fills these.
Extra credit for me?
