Upgraded my system to A8V Deluxe with a Newcastle 3500+ running at stock speeds, and my 3DMark scores have dropped compared to when I had a A7N8X-E with a 2500+ Barton - scores have fallen from ~2500 to ~2200.
System specs:
A8V Deluxe Rev 2.00 1008
Newcastle 3500+ @ stock speeds
2 x 512Mb Corsair XMS3200LL RAM installed in A1 & B1 slots for dual channel mode
Sapphire Radeon 9800Pro with Catalyst 4.10 Drivers
Seagate 200Gb SATA HDD on VIARaid
Windows XP SP2
None of the memory settings have been adjusted in the BIOS (all running at Auto), only changes have been to disable ports and enable legacy USB for keyboard. Nothing that should affect performance.
C&Q - disabled
AI Overclocking - Auto and Manual (manual set to 200/Auto/Auto/1.5/2.5 for relevant setting)
Does anyone have any suggestions what could be causing poor benchmark scores - I've seen that there have been some problems with Radeon 9800Pro cards but they're generally crashes from 3DMark and games - I've tried disabling FastWrites and setting AGP to 4x but this reduces the benchmark score even further.
Know that benchmarks scores aren't eveything, but would be nice to know that my UKŁ250 upgrade has been worthwhile - at the moment doesn't feel like it's been worth it.
Completely reformatted a couple of times - 1st time with HDD on Promise controller then another format and install with the HDD on the VIA Raid controller.
C&Q was enabled on the 1st build but disabled on the 2nd one - and no difference to the scores.
The 2500 was o/c to XP3200 speeds but on a second PC in the house which has a A7N8X-Deluxe with a NON oc'd Barton 2500 the 3DMark scores (2360) are still higher than I'm getting with this 3500/A8V combination.
I'll disable the 2T option and see if that makes any difference.
I had the same problem when I first got this board, It was mainly my error from setting the memory timings wrong in the bios. the above link helped me immensely. I used a program called Everest to verify that what my settings were, it even has a handy memory benchmark to measure your progress. If you care to you can download it here. http://www.snapfiles.com/get/everest.html
Hang in there it will get better, I almost threw in the towel on this board but now I am glad I didn't. good luck

Have changed memory options in the BIOS and updated Catalyst drives, can't get the 3DMark05 score past 2273. One of the other projects I had saved had my Barton oc'd to XP2800 speeds with a score of 2504.
BIOS settings on A8V used:
Memclock Mode - Limit
Memclock / CPU Ratio - 2:1 (DDR400)
DRAM > 4Gb - disabled
Bank Interleaving - enabled
Node Interleaving - disabled
Burst Length - 8
CAS - 2
TRC - Auto
TRFC - Auto
TRCD - 3
TWR - 3
TRWT - 3
TRAS - Auto
TRP - 2
TWCL - Auto
Read Preamble - 6.0ns
2T Command - disabled
Hypertransport set at 1000Mhz
Memory is Corsair XMS3200LL which is rated at 2-3-2-6 so the above settings should be OK for this RAM.
Sandra benchmarks @ ~5800 which is just above their score for Nforce3 150 PC3200 so the memory looks to be OK.
Have gone through the links in the posts above, but is there's anything obvious I've missed that would be affecting performance?
wow, that's odd, I have almost the exact same config, except for the hard drive. Same board, chip, memory and video card and I'm getting about 5700 on my 3DMark03 scores. I thought the Corsair is supposed to automatically set the memory timing for the fastest on it's own? I've never messed with the mem timings. I'd suggest checking your AGP settings in bios as well, there may be something messed up in there. Also, what settings are you running 3DMark at? Also, do you have the latest VIA drivers for you board? Get those, get the latest bios for the A8V. Other than that, make sure nothing else is running in the background when you run 3DMark.
ayeaye have you gotten anywhere with this yet? while I was researching to find a cure for my problem (games would crash to desktop while playing online and changing maps) I found this thread on Via Arena forums, and have had good success with it so far. http://forums.viaarena.com/messagevi...&enterthread=y
I've not done much more with the issue - Sandra benchmarks look OK for memory bandwidth and I tried 3DMark03 which was a score of ~6000 which was similar for other users with same config so I'm not too concerned about the low 3DMark05 score now - benchmarks aren't everything after all (as I mentioned in my 1st post).
Looking at the thread from link above - as I have SP2 slipstreamed into my XP CDs, I don't have the option of uninstalling AGP, although as I'm using the 4.55 VIA drivers the AGP driver shouldn't be installed (although posts seem to indicate otherwise).
I'm not getting crashes when gaming and games are playing smoothly enough, the 3DMark05 benchmark was just a bit of a disappointment after getting higher scores with an Athlon XP CPU.
I'll possibly look at reinstalling system with XP SP1 and applying the VIA drivers before upgrading to SP2 to see if that makes any difference - if I can find my SP1 XP CD!
This is driving me crazy I'm having same problems... old system was a7n8x-d rev 1.06, 1gig ddr kingmax ddr400, xp with sp2 streamlined as well.... asus 6800 GE, and ugh well didn't run that well cs-s was pretty slow, but I got the a8v-deluxe with 3500+ and well it's not running any faster than before! in fact it feels like its running slower, VIA 4in1's installed from CD.........
Since you have slipstreamed SP2, and installed 4-1's from the CD, maybe that link from viaarena given above is for you. Have you tried it? Or are you presently using the Via AGP driver?

I'm using the via 4in'1 included with CD, and i upgraded from their website, but it doesnt update the agp driver ....

In CMB's link from Viaarena there is the discussion about the poor 3DMark scores. The poster there said:
Quote:
...ran the full set of 3dmark tests and it seems the problem is my single texturing fill rate. It's less than half of what it should be, same in 3dmark03 also.
The fix for that poster was:
Quote:
Problem fixed. I had to totally uninstall MB and GPU drivers in safe mode then re-install.
In the past I've always got away with just installing drivers on top of old ones and had no problems. Obviously that's not going to be the case with my new setup.
They then posted a 3DMark link that was improved and seemed to be correct.
Trucker posted another link that talks more about this.
I don't know what version is on the CD, also don't know from where you updated your drivers, but at Asus, the Via 4-1 driver version is 449. The problem that Via has been talking about is that the Via AGP driver doesn't work well with SP2 in some cases. So the newest Via drivers, 4.55, supposedly do not install an AGP driver at all, and use the Microsoft one. If you installed a 4-1 version earlier than this, it would seem that you are using the Via AGP which may be causing your problems as mentioned above.
From the linked thread, it appears that this Via AGP driver is difficult to remove as there are two instances, so that thread starter posted their method for successfully doing that. Trucker61, said above that he had some success with following those instructions.
Let us know what you find out with your system.
