Talking To all the owners of the A64 3700+ (please post your overclock results)

Just as the title indicates...

I'm thinking about upgrading to a A64 3700+ since my sister is going to buy my 3400+ from me (lousy overclocker...CO revision ). Anyway, I don't have a lot of money to switch over to the 939 socket, but I do have enough to upgrade to this Socket 754 chip

To those who are using this chip, what kind of revision do you have and what are your overclocking results (if you have done so)?

Has anyone recently ordered one from newegg or zipzoomfly?

My setup up:

A64 3400+ clawhammer
DFI LANPARTY UT nF3 250Gb
(2x512)OCZ 3700 Gold rev3
eVGA 6800 Ultra
SB Audigy 2 Platinum
OCZ 600w

Thank you!

Re: To all the owners of the A64 3700+ (please post your overclock results)

I get about 2.75-2.8 GHz on air.

Seeing as you already have a Clawhammer unless it doesn't clock at all well it may not be worth the $ to upgrade.

Thanks for posting, Heidfirst

2.75-2.8 GHz on air = WOW!!

Where did you buy the chip? Newegg, Zipzoomfly or somewhere else?

My 3400+ Clawhammer doesn't overclock well at all. It doesn't like being pushed past its current speed of 2.2 ghz

With my sister buying this one from me (she doesn't overclock) it won't cost me much to upgrade

These 3400+'s really stink at overclocking, there are a few in the world that are good but ours sucks. Mine needs all the volts in the world to get 320x8 stable (2.55Ghz)

Re: To all the owners of the A64 3700+ (please post your overclock results)

Yeah, I pumped plenty of volts (not in the dangerous level) to get the chip to overclock and it didn't like it. I even tried loosening the memory and I was able to clock it to 2.3 Ghz, but that was short lived (lasted for 24 hours)

I think I just got a bad batch or something.

Seeing as I'm in the UK we''ll go for the "somewhere else" option.

Re: To all the owners of the A64 3700+ (please post your overclock results)

I'm watching this thread with great interest. I was thinking of upgrading from my 3200 to the 3700 also. I get 2550 mhz with my cpu at 255x10 and that's as far as it will go stable. I think these 3700 754 Clawhammers have 1 meg of L2 cache which makes things even more attractive BUT NOBODY EVER TALKS ABOUT THIS CPU? I saw many recent threads with hundreds of hits about a new 939 Clawhammer, but on the 754 platform the same thing with more cache doesn't even get noticed. This 3700 is one of the fastest clock ratings out for AMD yet nobody ever mentions it. If anyone does own this I sure hope they jump on this thread. By the way this chip is also priced right.

Re: To all the owners of the A64 3700+ (please post your overclock results)

I just double checked. This CPU is a Clawhammer with CG stepping and 1 meg of L2 cache with stock clock at 2.4gig. This thing ought to get to at least 2.7-2.8 on air? With that amount of cache it should be awsume! If anybody has experience with this tell us about it?

Awww, too bad. It would cost me an arm and a leg to buy it from there (seeing the way the dollar keeps dropping)

But seriously, *someone* must have bought this chip from Zipzoomfly or Newegg .

What I am curious about is the different style of packaging. Like at Zipzoomfly I noticed their picture shows a plastic container and Newegg has the normal box. Does it really make a difference ?

Right now Zipzoomfly has free 2nd day shipping and Newegg's shipping saver doesn't apply to me since I live in Alaska

So....don't be shy people! Show the rest of us your results

*Yes, I did read reviews about this chip, but I would rather go by the everyday *real* world results from my common AMD comrades*

Re: To all the owners of the A64 3700+ (please post your overclock results)

I'm also reading this thread with interest,
Even though my 3400 is a cg newcastle core overclocked to 2.6g the pricing of the 3700 has become more attractive lately, and if 2.7g + is common for this chip it could be the "last hurrah" for my 754 mobo,
The 3400 hits a wall at anything over 2.6g even with lots of extra Vcore (watercooled so heat isn't a problem) and from a lot of testing I think it's the Cpu mem controller hitting it's limit.
Anyone pushed a 3700 on water ?

Re: To all the owners of the A64 3700+ (please post your overclock results)

I know this post will go counter to most of the posts on this forum, but the reason I am with 754 instead of jumping to 939 is stability. I get good performance without any of the hundreds of issues reported by the 939 fans whatever the manufacturer. I almost jumped at the DFI 939 then read for days from the DFI Street forum. I never saw so many suicides waiting to happen. I love my MSI 754 it never gives me any trouble and I have overclocked the piss out of it. If people don't jump in about this 3700 Clawhammer then we can assume that they don't own one. The interest level in 754 boards and processors is near zero on this forum from what I can see. Every time somebody mentions they want to buy a 754 system everyone jumps all over them. Clock for clock the 754 still offers great value. I know it's not "future proof" but in reality neither are the 939 boards sold today. I've been around this block a long time you wait and see if the 939 board your sitting on today is the one you want next year. Nothing is "future proof" in the pc industry except Bill Gates.

Re: To all the owners of the A64 3700+ (please post your overclock results)

I did a google search and found this http://www.tomshardware.com/cpu/2004...html#directx_9 Read through this page and the benches on all the following pages. Check for the results of the 3700 Clawhammer. You won't have any trouble finding it. It's the one that always listed just behind the fx-55 and way ahead of all the Winchester 939 chips. No they didn't test the 3700 on 939 it's still on 754 and soundly beat the Winchesters on all benchmarks even with single channel memory. I have a feeling the 939 fans will have an excuse but I can't wait to hear it? This is the first concrete proof I have found as to how good this 3700 cpu is for the money. Note it was over $700 at introduction and is now selling for around $300 with near fx-55 performance. CAN YOU SPELL BARGAIN

You are right about the 939 socket, which is why I didn't dump my 754 setup to join the 939 bandwagon

The main reason (IMO) the 939 socket is so popular is the ability to dual channel, but for me the performance gain between single and dual is not *that* much of a difference (I could be wrong here guys/gals ). Now if I had the money to really upgrade I would go for the FX-55, of course

In all seriousness, I think you are right about a lot of people not owning this chip or have much interest in it, Chodi. With the info that Heidfirst gave and the reviews that I read; upgrading to this chip is not a bad option since I am not planning on leaving the 754 anytime soon

But this thread has only been up for a day, so I am sure more people with this chip will post over the weekend (at least I hope they will)

*EDIT*
Thanks for the link to the review, Chodi
Wow! The 3700+ is not too far behind the rest of the high-end pack! Not bad for a chip that cost hundreds of dollars less than the FX series and the 4000+

Re: To all the owners of the A64 3700+ (please post your overclock results)

I think it's interesting that when AMD released a 939 3500 Clawhammer with 512 cache the 939 fans went to it like a pack of wolves. There are threads all over about it with hundreds of posts. This 3700 is the same chip with twice the cache for about the same price and I feel like we are in the Twilight Zone waiting for a reply?

You are not alone

Honestly, I am *very* surprised by the lack of response. I thought for sure more people would have posted their results by now, heh

I find it hard to believe that only *one* person bought this chip

Oh, well...give it time
