If you did plug it in wrong you would see some smoke as all the various voltages from the PS would be mismatched to the wrong board voltages/grounds.

I jsut put my A8N SLI Deluxe together, fired it up last night. Before I installed the mobo in the case I installed a Zalman NB47J passive cooler on the chipset. It gets warm to the touch but I have had no problems. It was probalby your PSU I am using a PC power cooling 510 SLI PSU.

I've changed my graphics card from the blue to the black pci express slot and guess what ... I have screen again!! Of course, it is only on PCI Express 1x .
What should I do?
In the BIOS, SLI is set to auto, so the EZ_selector desides. Set it to normal (one graphics card) and try again?
Update BIOS?
At least I have some options again now and can start rulin' things out. But if don't get the blue slot to work it'll still be rma.
I hope some of you will be af assistance, I appreciate that very much
Switch the EZ selector to dual cards so that your 2nd slot is x8.
LOL
Updated Bios to rev 1006, no avail.
Option to set SLI to manual isn't available anymore, so can't try that either.
And then, with the graphics card in the black slot and the EZ selector set to Dual SLI as Sick Willie proposed (EZ powerconnector attached). Guess what postmessage I get? Yes indeed, "System failed VGA test" for crying out loud!
So it's back to where I was 2 hours ago: graphics card in black slot, screen with PCI Express 1x. Pfffff
Suggestions anyone ?
Otherwise dismantle tomorrow and send back
Try a different video card, if you haven't already. Otherwise, RMA the board. Without the EZ selector in dual mode, the black slot is not going to do more than x2.
Could be a compatibility problem with the Gigabyte 6600GT and the A8N. I'd want to check another card with the board before rma'ing a perfectly good motherboard. There were issues with a certain batch of Gigabytr's 6600GT's being able to run in Sli mode, and with some being properly recognized when installing forceware drivers for the cards.
I've tried the Motherboard BetaBios 1007.004, where one again can choose between Dual, Single or auto SLI-mode. So I switched to Single Video Card mode, but I get the same post error message with the Video Card in the blue PCI Express slot. Works well in the black slot though.

That would be in 1x mode. I haven't tried switching the EZ_Selector to SLI again.
Your only chance at x8 would be with the EZ selector in the dual position. If the other video card you tried was not a Gigabyte 6600GT that FastEddie says has issues with this motherboard, I would say RMA it. I would be bummed if I had a dual video card capable board and could only get x1 video, for sure.
The other video card was a Radeon X740 XL (out of the Medion 8386 configuration, check this: http://users.pandora.be/hevig/folderA2.jpg). And my Gigabyte 6600GT worked fine in the Medion computer.
