Resolved [FIX] For those using optimized SETI app and can't get new work

Found this on the Berkeley forums:

There seems to be a problem with optimized seti apps and boinc not getting new work during the current server difficulties. If you haven't got any new work for the last few days, try the following:
  • Stop Boinc/Seti
  • Rename app_info.xml so it won't be recognised
  • Restart BOINC/Seti
  • Let Boinc download the original SETI app - may not get through first time, but keep trying
  • Wait until all transfers have finished
  • Restore app_info.xml to original name
  • Restart BOINC/Seti

You should at least have a decent cache of downloaded WUs now to crunch. Not sure if this will get "fixed" or if you'll have to do the same again when the cache runs dry if Berkeley are still experiencing problems.

Sorry Ned UB, But I can't say how much I detest this workaround, So I'll just stay with Rosetta until It is really fixed.

Doesn't work If one has Crunch3r's 5.9.0.32 Boinc files installed, 2 resets of Boinc need to be done with 5.8.15, 5.8.16 I just installed though and may with 5.9.0.32 copied into the Boinc folder may not operate any different.

Joker, I agree. After 7 years of seti outages and changes I give up. I put in a
lot of time installing net 2.0 and dx9c on my old farm. I'm ready for a plug and
play project. Doing the research now...

Re: [FIX] For those using optimized SETI app and can't get new work

^^FWIW, I've run several other projects and offer the following comments.

None offer the credits/day of SETI when you're used to running an optimized SETI app.

Other than Riesel Sieve, none seem to have issues with the optimized BOINC client that I have installed now.

Climate Prediction is a prison sentence. The work units are on the order of 40K points each and take a 2.66 GHz Xeon chip the better part of 72 - 76 (uninterrupted) days to finish, assuming they don't die first. This on a machine that was racking up ~3300 points per day on SETI with four cores, or 800+ points per chip per day. Upside is that you get credit as you go along, so you don't get stiffed if a unit fails.

MJD posted a thread here a bit ago comparing credit given versus CPU work for most of the projects. It does not consider optimized apps or "credit request inflation" from optimized BOINC clients. If credits matter to you, take a gander.

I've now run SETI, QMC, Climate Prediction, Einstein, Rosetta, Proteins, uFluids, and Riesel Sieve. I'm currently running Climate, Rosetta, Proteins, and Riesel.

  • Stop Boinc/Seti
  • Edit app_info.xml(See below for an example)
  • Restart BOINC/Seti
  • Stop Boinc/Seti
  • Rename app_info.xml so it won't be recognized to appp_info.xml
  • Restart BOINC/Seti

It's text and It's easy to do, Nothing a non-tech can't do, So that the app only sees the 515 as the WU type(Detailed below), Ignore the line called "Name" as that is the Name of the Seti app You use and not what is displayed here. If You don't do this You won't get any New Seti WUs until the Server code is fixed and there is no word on when that will happen Yet.
