GA-G33M-DS2R and Raid 0

I've been trying to install Vista x64 on a striped array, however, Vista does not accept any of the drivers that came with the motherboard, downloaded off gigabyte's or even the intel site. I attempted the same task with XP, and I fell into the same boat. Does anyone know what the issue is with this board, or if it's Vista, etc. If anyone needs the exact error messages, I'll gladly post them, however, I only get to the point where it allows me to load a driver, to which I locate it, it shows up as the correct one, however when I click next, reports that it's not up to date etc. The kicker is it doesn't let me continue with the install because of it (even if there is a drive available that it can install to).

Just to be clear, this isn't my machine in my signature, this is a core 2 duo E6750 w/ the gigabyte board. I am working with 2 75gb raptors that I'd ideally like to use as a striped windows drive, and a 320gb that I'm solely using for testing.

DaMa, when you say you "fell into the same boat" with XP, what exactly do you mean? Do you mean you get to the point of selecting the correct driver but then given an error message of not being up to date? And I'm not totally clear on what you mean by the "kicker". Perhaps posting the error messages for all to see would be very helpful, along with the exact name of the driver you are trying to install for both XP and Vista.

Re: GA-G33M-DS2R and Raid 0

My apologies for not being clear. What I meant with XP was that after pressing F6 to load third party raid drivers via 3.5 floppy, it didn't recognize the driver. I would press the command to load the drivers, it would think for a moment, and then return to a message stating I should put a diskette in with the manufacturer drivers. So for XP, there isn't an error message, the drivers aren't detected. For Vista, the drivers are detected, however, they do not load because they report a date issue.

What I meant by the kicker was regarding Vista. Even if I have a drive that isn't in raid, it still will lock me at the load driver screen. It won't let me bypass it to say install windows on that non-raid disk. I find that glitchy. Secondly, if I turn raid off all together, I still get stuck at the load driver screen. So I think something fishy is going on.

Re: GA-G33M-DS2R and Raid 0

On a side note, I loaded Fedora in the meantime, and that detected the raid array immediately. So it's either an issue with the Gigabyte drivers, or Windows interpreting the drivers. (At least that's what the evidence is pointing to so far)

Re: GA-G33M-DS2R and Raid 0

Let me look at my bios and see if anything jumps out. I don't use RAID, nor do I have Vista on this system (do have it on my DS3 if that counts). I know some people run into problems with XP or Vista actually finding a driver within a folder. I installed XP on my ds2r using AHCI so I needed to do the F6 step. I'll look to see if I can find the floppy I used for that. Gotta go now, we're going out for our anuual "let's see all the tacky Christmas lights" drive. Will get back later.

DaMa, here's a list of the sata drivers/files I had on the floppy I used to install XP. I took a picture of the listing, and pasted down below:

I copied these directly to the floppy, i.e., not within any folders. Hope this helps.

Yeah, I had those - perhaps the floppy I was using was corrupt, so I just deemed it as unsuccessful - let me go ahead and try it again with the floppy and XP. I'll report my findings. Thanks!

Re: GA-G33M-DS2R and Raid 0

So I downloaded the drivers off of intel's site http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Filter_Results.aspx?strOSs=All&strTypes=All&ProductID=2101&lang=eng&OSFullName=All%20Operating%20Sys tems using the 32-bit floppy (I'm giving up on 64 bit for right now). And the error message I get is: "File txtsetup.oem caused an unexpected error (1024) at line 1747 in d:\nt\base\boot\setup\oemdisk.c." I'm really getting unlucky when it comes to this.

Re: GA-G33M-DS2R and Raid 0

I realized a simple mistake on my part with my last post. I had to use a winim extracter due to my floppy drive being USB on the machine I was working with to create the disks. By extracting those files, and putting them on the disk, somewhere along the way corruption occurs. I did a little research and in the registry I was able to change the drive letter of the floppy from b to a, and used the exe from Intel appropriately. Loaded up the Windows XP F6 function to specify drivers and it worked flawlessly. I'm currently installing XP on it now, so I'm very pumped. I also made a 64 bit floppy just in case I need it during the Vista install, but if my memory serves me right, once XP is on an array, Vista seems to already identify with it, however, I'll have more on that shortly.

Glad you got it working. Yeah, I like to keep around good 'ol floppy drives, and plug them in for these occasions. Just like I prefer ps/2 connections for mice and keyboards. Anyway, glad you've got it sorted out.

Re: GA-G33M-DS2R and Raid 0

Yeah, the floppy always becomes a savior...well maybe not always, but it can be useful. So it turned out that XP was able to detect the array with the proper disk. Unfortunately, Vista was not able to do the same thing, so something really must be fubar in that area. What I ended up doing was I installed XP, and once it loaded, I immediately stuck in the Vista DVD. From that point, Vista actually located the array, and offered to do both an Upgrade or Clean install (renames the old windows dir to .old) and that ended up working. Not the cleanest of ways to get a crappy OS on your system, considering if I want Vista 64bit, I'd need to put XP 64bit on first, but in the end, it worked. The sad part about this whole situation is, even if I didn't RAID at all, I'd still be in the same boat with Vista detecting these drives, so I'm bittersweet that I had to go through all this. Anyway, those are my findings, and surprised you didn't have to jump through hoops as well, which seems odd to me.

Re: GA-G33M-DS2R and Raid 0

Wow, I apologize for the late post on that. I thought I had hit submit on it, but clearly I didn't when I looked just now. Anyway, I have another question since you have this board. Do you know if there is an option to get a USB keyboard and mouse to turn on the computer. I have it set as double click and password, and with the ps/2 keyboard and mouse it works fine, but unfortunately the USB ports aren't getting power when the machine is off. I figured it was a bios option, but I can't seem to find it.

Re: GA-G33M-DS2R and Raid 0

Looking through the manual, I don't see a power up via usb keyboard or mouse, though you can do so with a ps/2 mouse or keyboard.

As for my system, I did not install Vista, only XP. I did install Vista on my DS3, both Vista 64 and then Vista, and both were very straightforward (without RAID). Vista for me was an experiment that worked. I got a legit copy very cheap, and basically installed it as a weekend experiment thinking it would prove to be a total pain in the butt, and I found it to be anything but. Over time, I've gotten tired of some of its annoyances and have failed to see much benefit over XP (hence I installed XP on my DS2R), but I was surprised how accepting it was of printers and old games, and I really like superfetch.

Re: GA-G33M-DS2R and Raid 0

Yeah, I have a legit copy as well that I purchased through school. I'm sure down the road I'll attempt it again, but for right now this will suit me. I'm not going to go crazy and make sure everything is perfected. Well again, thanks for your help, and if you do come across anything regarding the power on via usb, shoot me a private message. Take care.
