The EVGA 720a thread (EVGA 113-M2-E113 )

Thought I would start a new thread on this EVGA 720a motherboard
here is a link to the board
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813188036

http://www.evga.com/products/moreInf...board%20Family

I bought this board and was not expecting much , My last EVGA Intel motherboard was kinda buggy .
However I was plesently surprised and disapointed at the same time . The board is very fast , easy to setup , and reasonably priced . I found that it required no tweaking as stock memory timings are very nice unlike some biostar boards that default to some crazy slow timings . I paired it with a AMD 6000+ Brisbane ,3.1 ghz , and some mushkin DDR 800 HP2
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820146764
The board seems to just love this combo . man it is fast ! Very snappy .
I Installed XP pro In ACHI mode and it worked . of course EVGA does not supply floppy disks that you will need so I used this site to make my disks
http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Support/M...ProductID=2819
I used the ACHI floppys for XP and it worked great !
Basicly the 720a and the 750a use the same drivers
My 1st install I used the EVGA driver disk , I have found that their are newer drivers available direct from nvidia
http://www.nvidia.com/object/nforce_winxp_15.24.html
I was disapointed that EVGA chose not to use the nvidia lan , it uses a Realteck pcie lan .
I also noticed that the drivers I downloaded includes a sound, vid card driver ,lan driver, and some kinda "amd away" driver . I chose not to install these just the chipset drivers and the mediashield drivers.
I was also disapointed to find that their is no manual included in the packaging just a quick instal guide .
The layout of the board could be better , if your using a big vid card like my 9800gtx then your sata ports will be blocked , I just installed my cables before my vid card . Also disabling the PATA port does no work xp will still see it and install drivers . seeing that I had 2 PATA DVDRW drives anyway I just ditched the stat dvdrw drive and used all my ports for hard drives .
Another issue , if your using a large cooler like a artic cooling A64 pro then the cooler will hang over your memory as slots 1 and 2 are used for dual channel. That was no real issue for me as the stock heatsink that came with the 6000+ is very a very nice copper base , 4 heatpipe cooler . well worth the 76 bucks on new egg

Re: The EVGA 720a thread (EVGA 113-M2-E113 )

dont rely on tech support from evga I emailed them about a issue about a non existant PS2 mouse being detected my windows xp

http://www.evga.com/forums/tm.asp?m=...1&key=&#662191

get this I wrotes in about a problem about a ghost ps2 mouse being detected

here is my answer

Thank you for contacting the EVGA Customer Service Team.
My name is Daniel Branton and I will be answering your question today. Please do not reply to this email, submit any follow up questions here

Question (12/07/2008 3:43:28 PM): well their is a issue not related to what I wrote in , Windows xp is picking up a PS2 mouse in my device manager . problem is I have no ps2 mouse connected . I am using a microsoft usb mouse . I tryed to uninstall it but no go windows just reistalls it and then I see a yellow bang in the device manager with windows saying their is a problem with the mouse ( The ps2 mouse that is) I tryed disababling USB mouse support in the bios and that did not work either so something is amiss in the bios . I also am using a PS2 keyboard and have disabled USB keyboard support as well thank you and hope your day goes well God Bless! Gerald The Lord is My Shepherd,I shall not want. Psalms:23

Answered By Daniel B (12/08/2008 1:45:03 AM): Gerald, If there is a detection of a PS2 device that is not showing correctly, the PS2 port is intended for keyboards rather that a mouse, so what the issue could be is a problem with windows and how its picking up the port. I would suggest maybe reinstalling the motherboard drivers (download driver sweeper http://www.guru3d.com/category/driversweeper/ and follow the instructions, select nvidia chipset drivers ) make sure you have downloaded the latest drivers from EVGA.com prior to running this and once it is complete, reinstall the latest drivers to see if the issue goes away EVGA

I gotta wonder who is running the tech support ? Monkeys ? the nvidia drivers do not even have ANYTHING to do with the ps2 ports I have a ps2 mouse being detected and this is clearly a bios issue

Is this the multi-media system?

Have you got the usb thingy worked out?

I'd just call EVGA.

I would call but I dont know their tech support number anyway I finally got a different guy on tech support .
Undersea , I am or should I say was planing on using this for a HTPC but it is realy going to depend on what EVGA does . I still have 28 days left to return the board , wish I had of gotten the gygabyte 750a chipset board you had but new egg was out and no other place will deliver to my work , I dont trust having stuff delivered to my apt complex.
As far as the Phantom PS2 mouse nothing has been solved , I suspect it is a bios issue because the board will not release IRQ 12 and IRQ12 is directly related to a PS2 mouse at least that is what windows device manager is reporting

edit Undersea what is your opinion , wait for the gygabyte
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128339
or I could go with the biostar
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813138113
which board do you prefer ?

brother.... so you're thinking of moving on from the EVGA already? Tech support does seem somewhat hit-or-miss, and I'm also curious as to how often or even how responsive they are to update a BIOS.

As for the phantom mouse problem, I haven't run into it, but I'm using both a PS/2 keyboard and mouse. Maybe next time I fire it up, I'll do a little mix and match with my USB and PS/2 stuff to see what happens.

I dont know what I am going to do might just get a USB keyboard or just change to a ps2 mouse . I am still tempted with the GIGABYTE GA-M750SLI-DS4 . Then I could just move the evga to HTPC service . The board is (evga) pretty fast . Main concern is bios updates with the EVGA their are none at the moment . The gygabyte site is promising AM3 support
EVGA support is nice now I got a different guy who seems more informed but even so their is littel He can do untill they release a new bios
another thing I was real disapointed that they did not build the EVGA with the nvidia lan

Re: The EVGA 720a thread (EVGA 113-M2-E113 )

Well, I tried a USB mouse with my PS/2 keyboard.... and for me, there is no PS/2 mouse being picked up in device manager.... everything looked okay. I had also contacted tech support trying to find out what CPUs were supported, both current and possible upcoming 45nm. I was directed to their support page where the currently supported CPUs were (finally) listed:

http://www.evga.com/support/mbcpu/

I was also informed that any upcoming 45nm or AM3 support (when available) would be posted on the website.

Been doing a little OCing on it, not pushing too much yet, but running pretty smooth and cool at 3.0G (12 X 250).... so far so good. You also inspired me to order some of that Mushkin ram that you're running, just to check it out for myself.

That mushkin ram is kick A** ram for this board
I am running 4-4-4-12 at 1.9 volts stable and fast .
I have been in contact with tech support looks like I got a bad board so they say , a short in the PS2 port . I will just return it to new egg as I am still covered by their warentee . Shame as it is a fast board but if it has a short then I am concerned that something else may fail

Thanks for the recommendation on the Mushkins! I'm looking forward to seeing what this board can do.... hoping it'll be at least as good as my TA770.

That's too bad about the short. I'd be kinda worried about it too.... good thing that you found it quick enough to return it to the 'Egg. What's next? The Gigabyte?

yea I go with gygabyte Undersea recomended it and He had one already so I should be pretty safe their . I just pulled to trigger on a GIGABYTE GA-M750SLI-DS4 from zipzoomfly , Mwave and new egg were out of stock so this must be a real hot motherboard . It is kinda a shame , other then the phantom mouse issue the board is flawless I kinda hate to send it back .
I am kinda concerned about zipzoomfly more so because of shipping just hope fedex will drop at the rental office . I wanted to use new egg but no stock !

Hey, good luck with the Gigabyte 750SLI.... I always thought that one looked like a nice board.

I'm getting more and more impressed with the EVGA.... trying out 3.2G now (10 X 320).... for that I finally took VID off auto and set it to 1.35v. Haven't tuned the Ballistix yet.... just set it 5-5-5-18-26 at 2.0v with 533 divider:

There's more to go yet

Re: The EVGA 720a thread (EVGA 113-M2-E113 )

I wanted everyone to know how good new egg is and what just happened , I posted a review on the board on new egg that did not get posted ,it basicly was about the EVGA tech support and my issue. instead what happened New egg contacted Me and gave me a RMA . now that alone is good , but it gets better seeing that new egg is out of the board, they are refunding my money AND paying shipping back to new egg .
that is real customer service
I did not even ask for this RMA or my money back

That's great they got you taken care in such good shape! I don't think a person can ask for much better service than what the 'Egg usually provides. I know my experiences with them have been pretty good.
