NB Temp Issue with 790GX XE / 720BE

Okay guys here's one for you......is it possible for the temp diode for the NB cooler to "die" or "stick"? SpdFan and HWMonitor has been showning what I assume has been a NB temp in the upper 50 - low 60sC. All I've done was swap out the fan in the CNPS8700-CU I have and now 115C is the lowest it will go with load it shows 127C. However to the touch it is barely warm. As a matter of fact I'm running OCCT right now and I can barely feel any heat.

I've gone into the Config part of SpdFan and Temp 1 - 3 is set at Diode. For S & Gs I reset all three to thermistor, with Temp1 not changing but the other two went up as expected.

According to someone over at rebels.....

In SpeedFan, the temp sensors for the TA790GX series boards are:

Temp1 = NB
Temp2 = SB
Temp3 = CPU Diode (on MB)

EDIT: as a side note when I first set this up in the wee hours of this morning that particular "point" did NOT show up. After rebooting and doing some piddling in the bios (something else) did they "reappear".
Also I have only been touching the top of the NB cooler...slid my finger down to the side and yes it is warm but I would think at 127C I'd have a nice burnt finger!

Jeddi,

I just set up a 790gx 128 board. I'll post some HW monitor soon.

I think your OK, sounds like a diode went bad.

In talking with ud I tried resetting the bios and reloading both SpdFan and HWMon but that didn't change a thing. Something else that is squirrelly is usually if you switch from diode to thermistor the temp goes up. Well for S & Gs just tried it again and it went DOWN (dropped 17C)!

Looks like something is blown that's for sure, but.....it seems the mosfet sink is too heavy for the tape so need to figure out something there. So total tare down is about to happen and for S & Gs I'll reseat the NB cooler.

Thanks us.

Thanks for reminding me I haven't cleaned since the last quals!!

Well guys found the issue........ it seems when I changed out the fan in the zalman I was too lazy to remove the mobo from the case. Remounting it was a wee bit clumsy but it went in okay after a couple of wiggles.

When I originally mounted the hsf it was out of the case and was a straight down with no issues. However this time I must have been a little off center. With this disassembly I jerry rigged something to help support the mosfet cooler and for the S & Gs was going to reset the NB cooler “just in case”. That’s when I noticed the push pins on the cooler were a little “out of align”. On closer inspection it turns out that the HSF hits the corner of the NB cooler that was under it. Guess one or more of my “wiggles” did the damage.

Long story short I notched the NB cooler and reset it. It is now back to running in the upper 50 to low 60s C. Glad I decided when this happened to lower the OC and volts because the NB was doing the 115 – 127C!

I'll post some pics over in the worklog when I get the chance.....need to get the broad leaf / crabgrass killer down now that the rain is giving me a break!

Well?

I'm quite happy with the 790GX 128 for $69.99. I guess I will sell my 750 when it gets back from the broken motherboard place I new that bad electronic smell was no good Just happy it wasn't the 4850 GPU that I threw out the original cooler

"Seems" to be however are you running any type of cooling on the mosfets also? Then again I have no knowlege of how the A3s run that'll be someone else's question.

I just noticed, I don't know how I did not before, the screen shot I put up shows two "Temp1" values... maybe 55 and 21 is supposed to average out
