DHCP issue

Let me start off by saying I know next to nothing when it comes to this stuff..

Anyway, I'm trying to get a different IP which I should since DHCP gives them out each time I restart. But I keep getting the same one. I'm using a Linksys router with dd-wrt and Win7. Any suggestions?

Thank you,

Re: DHCP issue

One way is to change the MAC address on your router

Re: DHCP issue

Is that all there is to this? Just selecting "enable"?

Re: DHCP issue

assuming you are talking about changing your 'external' IP
and not the internal IP

http://www.whatismyip.com/

as long as you change the MAC that your ISP sees coming from your end
it will be the fastest way to get a new IP

You should also reboot everything else in the chain afterwards too
PC, cable modem, router etc...

Re: DHCP issue

Here's what I'd like to do. I have 3 computers working off this network. 2 wireless and one connected. I'd like the one connected to be changed.

Re: DHCP issue

since you mentioned the printer
it sounds like you are referring to changing the "internal" IP

you can reserve a specific IP for a device using this:

Thank you,
So from what you're telling us, you want your desktop PC to get a different LAN (local) IP address each time you restart your PC? Can I ask why? Doesn't seem like there's a whole lot to gain from that.

Usually people want to change their WAN (internet) IP address for things like security or to get around a lockout on a particular website (eg. download sites that put a time limit on after you exceed the download limit).

If you want only the LAN IP to change on a more regular basis, you'll need to reduce the DHCP lease time. By default it's usually set to 1 day. Basically means if you turn your PC on every day, you get the first IP address. The problem with that is that DHCP will assign the first available IP address to networked devices as they are connected. If you're working with five devices on the network and you don't want the others to change or they never get switched off or unplugged, you're only looking at one device or at most, two devices using DHCP assignment on a regular basis. A waste of time 'cos the wired PC will most likely still end up with the same IP each time (it's easier to manage printers and VoIP phone systems if they're on static IP's and you also said you want the wireless PC's on static IP's).

Basically you're left with having to manually assign the IP and change it when you want to - as MrBlack has stated.

If you want to change the WAN IP address (makes more sense), somewhere in the user interface for your router there should be a disconnect/connect button. With the default Linksys firmware, that's under one of the Status options. I don't imagine it'd be too different in DD-WRT.

Re: DHCP issue

Yes, that's what I'd like to do. But, it doesn't have to be each time I restart because that isn't that often. The reason is because I was having a problem logging into some sites and this IP was banned. And when I was requesting my login info be sent to me, they never came until about an hour after the last time, which was too late.

So the static IP on the desktop would be what I need to do? Any info on doing this with this firmware and win7?

Re: DHCP issue

no, you external IP needs changing, the one the modem has. Your internal IP's have nothing to do with getting banned on the outside world, all they see is you main IP provided address.

Re: DHCP issue

Oh, well in that case is that something I need to talk to my IPS about? Or is there a way to handle this on my end?

Re: DHCP issue

No, you'd follow the directions given earlier about changing the mac address.

What do you mean by banned? Usually you'd only get banned from a single site not multiple ones.
