Router issue question

My 4 year old linksys router died and I replaced it last week with a new linksys 54gl
Set up no problems then lost the internet tonight, removed router from the system, internet works.

Reset router and set it up again working once more.

Can Comcast trash a router or the settings?

I am confused about this one.

Re: Router issue question

Try updating the firmware and let us know how that goes.

You obviously have more faith in Comcast being up 100% than I do

I checked that immediately and it was up, at least I think so.
They rarely admit when they do have a problem. Customer service and honestly are like dinosaurs...

No, not directly. And if you have any doubt, just change your router's password.

Anyway, back when I was with Comcast (2-3 years ago), whenever my router's MAC address changed (by replacing router, changing NICs when I had cloning turned on, etc.), Comcast required that I register the new MAC address with them. Until that time, internet connectivity was severely limited. To register it, it just required either 1.) calling them and they do it for you, or 2.) go to a special URL on their network. (I don't recall the cryptic address.)

Is it possible that is what is happening? Do they even still require that? Time Warner, my current provider, doesn't require that.

Oh, and just releasing and then renewing your IP isn't enough. :P

Time Warner gave us some crappy no-name modem that is locked into my PC NIC, and I've had to do MAC cloning to use my router.

Comcast did not require anything from me.

Heh. I'm still using the same old modem I got from Comcast six years ago when I originally signed up. I've often toyed with the idea of buying my own modem, but then I figure why fix what's not broken. I'm only with Time Warner because Comcast decided to sell off their cable service here in Texas to them.
