Question Grabbing miniDV data... software suggestions?

I have a Canon VIXIA HV30 minicam and I need to extract data off the tape. It has a firewire interface, and I can see the camera. However, the included Canon software disk only allows you to read data from the camera's miniSD card slot via USB.

Can you suggest a free program to pull the recordings off the tape via firewire? I can use either Windows or Linux (Ubuntu) for this.

Doesn't make sense that they provide the interface and don't use it. Just plugging in the firewire may get the Windows program to fire up, or the Canon software.

Also try the home theater crowd, they probably know more.

Found a free one called STOIK Capturer; seems to work with short test recordings.

Sony Vegas might do the trick. But generally you want to use the firewire port for better performance anyways. Plus, reliability is usually better with firewire also and you don't need drivers, just plug and go.
