WHS: Network Printer

Hi everyone,

I have a problem and I'm turning to ppl who have experience with this issue that might be able to help me.

I just got my WHS up and running. Its on a mobo with dual nics. Right now my router only has 4 ports, and all 3 are used by computers and 1 by a networked printer; server not included. I'm going to take the port used by the printer and use it for the server, however this leaves me networked printer useless. Can I some how route the the printer through the extra nic on my server? How would I go about this? Does the server always need to be on?

Thanks

Sure, you could connect the printer to the spare NIC on the server. Just assign an IP to the NIC and one in the same subnet to the printer. Install the printer software and share the printer. And, yes, if you do this the server will have to be on for any of the other machines to see the printer.

However, a 10/100 or 10/100/1000 switch connected to your router would be a better solution.

Number? No, I don't mind being a number as long as the number is 1.
