HD audio to go with HD video

I was posting a link to a review of the Haupauge HVR-1800 TV Tuner Card on the front page and I got to thinking.

Are you held hostage to whatever audio chip is on the tuner, or is it able to act as a pass through card and feed the audio to an HD Audio card in your system?

Anyone have any thoughts?
