What's a "Decent" X4 Upgrade??

Haveing another wild hair idea.........while we (as in AMD types) would love to have a 965, the price would make it exceedingly hard to sneak under the wife's radar.

Now that my Asus Asus M3A78-CM is giving me fits, might use it as an "excuse" to pickup another mobo for Kermit and if I do that the thought would be to "upgrade" it's function to primary and gamer to work with DreamCatcher.

So if I could find me a decent inexpensive mATX 780 - 790 AM2+ mobo(yeah right!) why not try for a similar PII X4 so I could still GPU and SMP fold as well as use it for everyday.

So I need to find the impossible.....a PII X4 that is oc'able and "cheap"!

Re: What's a "Decent" X4 Upgrade??

mr_raider got me thinking (usually leads to trouble) and found the following combos at the egg........

AMD Athlon II X4 620 Propus 2.6GHz + BIOSTAR TA790GXE AM3/AM2+/AM2 AMD 790GX for $174 (which might slide by easier )

or

AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition Deneb 3.2GHz (125W) + BIOSTAR TA790GXE AM3/AM2+/AM2 AMD 790GX for $246 (like this one for the money but at an additional $75ish.........)

or

AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition Deneb 3.4GHz (140W) + BIOSTAR TA790GXE AM3/AM2+/AM2 AMD 790GX for $266

Re: What's a "Decent" X4 Upgrade??

I have yet to see any evidence that the l3 cache in the Phenom II's makes any difference in folding. In gaming, maybe.

Consider also the nice 95w tdp version of the 945. It clocks pretty well.

If you can wait a few months, AMD is set to replace their current Phenom IIs with newer lower powered steppings.

Re: What's a "Decent" X4 Upgrade??

Gaming is starting to float up to the top along with folding as this would allow DreamCatcher just to be a server / folder..........and time is not a friend in this. If I can't get the Asus -CM to play nice anymore that will be the "excuse"!

One thing to consider with the last combo you have listed, the 965BE is a 140W cpu and that means dealing with a fair amount of heat and since you tend to lean toward smaller cases that could mean cooling problems.
I'd say go for the 620 combo!
Just something to consider !

Re: What's a "Decent" X4 Upgrade??

I just put together the budget leaderboard PC with a 9800 GTX instead, and after putting it together, I've realized the lack of upgradeability on an MA770-UD3P in terms of multiple PCI Express 2.0 slots.

I'll likely be on the lookout for another board soon if need be. I'll have to read up a bit to see whether it's worth it and what I'm missing out on.

If I pull the trigger on one of these it'll more than likely be the 620 combo if nothing else but to preserve some "domestic tranquility".

Yes 140W would be right up there with the cost as to why I wouldn't go with that particular 965BE. And your right the combo would be going into an Ultra MX6.

But ohhhhhhh the 955BE is sooooooo tempting!

Yea I know, the 965BE is calling me also. I figure next month I can get myself a Xmas present and get one as the first step toward my move to a AM3 system.

NewEgg has the new processsors, and they are listed by their wattage so you can be sure. Same price as the older ones so far.

I like my X4 620 quite a bit. Course don't do any form of benchmarking.
