Dummy Award.

I take first place. Tonight I was visiting a truck site and just
happened to open a youtube vid when all of a sudden the
search bars, all of them, start filling up with an "e"! Oh,oh.
I got nailed with a nasty virus. I use all sorts of malware
and virus programs to protect my main unit from these,
but I thought somone figured out how to get past em.

I work on it for at least an half hour with no luck. I try
to go into msconfig, still nothing but "e"s. I open the
browser and the bookmarks page is flying up and down.

What the heck kind of virus is THIS ?

I'm thinking a whole reformat. Just great. I shut it down
and go take a break. I have a laptop with the same
setup and I need to go into my back account and change
the password so I don't wake up with nothing in it.

While doing this, my foot happens to kick something
down on the floor.

I look down and see a spare keyboard I have hooked
to the BACK of my main unit turned upside down and
the "e" key had been depressed ! I had forgotten to unplug
this devise from a repair I was doing last week.

So needless to say, I'm very relieved but confess I feel
like the biggest fool breathing.

Moral of the story, Keep it simple, stupid..

Thanks for reading.

Re: Dummy Award.

So it wasn't the "E" virus, instead you got hit with the dreaded "U.E." virus...User Error.

One time I had an 'automatic' keyboard. But that was after spilling a pop into the keyboard. Unfortunately it would never type what I wanted, only what it felt like...when ever it wanted.

Re: Dummy Award.

Yes you're quite right. The "U.E." virus though difficult to pin
down at first, was definitely verified..

Thank Heaven I didn't have what you had. I'd be running
for the hills with a keyboard that just decided to do what
and when it wanted to do. That's just a lil too spooky even
the cause being known, but wouldn't that be a terrible
joke to play on someone who is new to the PC thing ?

Re: Dummy Award.

Yeah, but what's even better is when you VNC into a computer which a n00b is running! Now that's entertainment!

At my old job I was doing some database modifications on computer beside our server down in the basement one time. The terminal I was using just also happened to be the VNC server too. Normally this wasn't a problem as it would only get used a few hours a week, and they were generally after hours.

Well the owner's wife decided to do some work so she log into the computer and sees a bunch of 'strange' windows running so she promptly tries to close them and robotically answers 'no' to every save question. Meanwhile I'm frantically trying to through the mouse cursor left and right to make her miss all the buttons as I'm watching all my work disappear!

Luckily I finally did get Notepad started and typed in a few panicking words asking telling her to stop for a minute to let me save everything. She said she was wondering why the computer wasn't acting right. Oh the joys!

Re: Dummy Award.

Don't worry, you are not alone!

I have a total of 3 keyboards hooked up to one system. ( Ideazon merc, OCZ sabre, and a PS/2 keyboard because USB legacy support is fritzy ).

It gets quite hilarious at times.

Re: Dummy Award.

Wait till you get a 5 button mouse that randomly click locks on any button. in the middle of browsing, gaming or whatever...
In the end i had thrown every AV and software tool i could think off at this and finally spat the dummy, raged on the keyboard and mouse ruining only the keyboard...
after sleeping on it, my spare old wireless kb+mouse combo came out and what ya know... problem didnt come back.
Only then did it dawn on me.

I had a beer to celebrate and quietly kept it to myself until now.

Re: Dummy Award.

LOL I've been known to do things like that. Having something rest on the keyboard and sit there confused for a few seconds before realising what's going on.

Layer 8.

About ten years back I had a great little program. Can't remember what it was called, but you could connect remotely to PC's, eject and close CD drives at will, reverse mouse axis, generate error messages and so on. Used to use it on my colleagues across the hall.

A couple of years ago I added a post in another forum asking people to confess their computer sins and post their dumbest mistakes. It became quite lengthy and very funny. Maybe we should start one here so no2guncntrl wouldn't feel alone.

Re: Dummy Award.

I think the worst is when you type a sentance or two and realize you had no text box selected. (not an issue anymore since I do not need to look at the keyboard anymore)

Re: Dummy Award.

^. Gosh, I do that all the time. I haven't trained
myself to use a keyboard without looking at it.
In fact I'm so bad I had to go buy a Firefly KB
so I see the keys. I'm just flat losin' it.

Re: Dummy Award.

I took a typing course back in highschool. Didn't teach me a thing so I thought...A year later I had to type a page from a book into the a computer for school, I was half way through the page when I realized I was touch typing! It was the weirdest feeling.

It was then that I realized that I was looking at the keys out of habit, but really I didn't need to. If you get the fingering down, you'll soon figure it out...even if you don't realize that you figured it out.
